King Mackerel & the Blues are Running @ The Riatlo
SEP 17-22

THEATRICAL OUTFIT TAKES OFF FOR THE COAST. Enjoy one last blast of summer as the Outfit presents musical set on the Carolina coast – Fishing, singing & dancing & hanging out in a favorite old beach bar.
For the third time in as many seasons, Theatrical Outfit presents a musical by songwriter Jim Wann.
The Outfit’s 2002-2003 season continues with King Mackerel and the Blues are Running, another musical created by Jim Wann, along with numerous partners.
Theatrical Outfit presented successful productions of Wann’s Pump Boys and Dinettes (July 2002) and last summer’s regional premiere of The People versus Mona. For the September 17-22, 2002 production of King Mack, writer, actor, recording artist Jim Wann will be joining the Atlanta cast and crew for this fun-filled show.
The show revolves around the threatened demolition of beloved coastal hangout. Developers have plans for high-priced building projects on the site of Miss Mattie Jewell’s Corncake Inlet Inn. Three musicians, “The Coastal Cohorts” plan benefit concerts to prevent commercialization of the coast.
Wann’s music is always fun-filled and often packs a message. In creating this musical, Wann joined forces with an unusual team of writing partners: Bland Simpson, a UNC- Chapel Hill English Professor and Don Dixon, a rock producer and bass player, whose credits include work with R.E.M. and The Smithereens.
King Mackerel and the Blues are Running previews Tuesday, September 17 (all
tickets $12.00) and opens Wednesday, September 18. (Tickets $50 & $42, including post-show reception). Tuesday through Saturday performances are at 7:30 with a Sunday matinee at 2:30. Thursday through Sunday tickets run $12 to $40 and are available at the Rialto Center box office -- 404 651-4727 or in person at the Rialto Box Office, 80 Forsyth Street (corner of Luckie and Forsyth Streets), buy on-line at http://www.theatricaloutfit.org

"Out In The Cold" @ MLK Jr. Screening Room
THU SEP 19 7:30p

In conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site DREAM
Series. A documentary by Eric Criswell and Martin Bedogne, 52 minutes, video
Admission is FREE
Winner of the 2002 New York Gay and Lesbian Film Festival for Best Documentary!
OUT IN THE COLD is a riveting new film that brings attention to the
hidden world of runaway and homeless gay and lesbian youth. This documentary takes the audience on a journey into the lives of young people who are rejected because of sexual orientation by their family or guardians after coming out.
Turned away by family, clergy, teachers and school administrators, the lucky
ones find safety with friends, or a supportive relative; however, many head to the one place they know they can be free: the streets. Turning to drugs,
prostitution, and crime as a way to survive, these once suburban kids with hopes and dreams for the future are lucky to stay alive. OUT IN THE COLD not only asks the question why, but seeks to uncover the issues that lead to gay youth being ostracized by their community. Interviews with parents, teachers, clergy, and the youth themselves drive this award-winning documentary, in hopes of uncovering what has to change to make sure that no child is ever rejected and thrown away simply because of his or her identity. This film is proudly presented as a Developing Racial Equality Through Art and Music (DREAM) Series screening, in conjunction with the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site. Major funding provided by Crawford Communications.

"LA TROPICAL" @ Central Library Theatre
WED SEP 25 7p

Dir. David Turnley, 96 minutes, video
7:00pm, followed by reception and salsa dancing!
Admission is FREE
Join IMAGE Film & Video and the Atlanta Fulton Public Library for the kick-off of MONTAGE, our new screening series showcasing the best in filmmaking diversity. Anything goes, from world cinema to experimental film to shorts programs to teen works.
Captured in stunning black-and-white video by one of the world•s most talented photojournalists, LA TROPICAL is an extraordinary film about an extraordinary Cuban dance club. Popular music aficionados call it the best dance hall in the worlds but you wont find it in any travel brochure.
Tucked away in a remote barrio of Havana, the Salon Rosado at La Tropical is the club where generations of working-class Cubans of color have always gathered to dance, sing, and live la vida loca. For only a few pesos, locals shimmy their way onto the tightly-packed, open-air dance floor and move nonstop to the rhythms of the hottest and edgiest contemporary bands on the island. The film documents La Tropicals seasoned dancers, popular musicians, and up-and-coming musical artists, but the central character of this film is La Tropical itself. Its multi-faceted story, told through the voices of the people who love it, is the story of Cuba in the twentieth century. This screening is co-sponsored by the Atlanta Fulton Public
Library and their Centennial Film Festival Committee, Friends of Central Library and Global Access Department in recognition of Hispanic Awareness Month. Post-screening salsa dancing provided by Julian Mejia and the Cuban Salsa Dance Troupe.
