Baaba Maal featuring Daande Lenol @ The Rialto

From the northern, riverside town of Podor comes a modern musician filled with the mysteries of ancient Africa. Catlike and delicate in appearance, Baaba Maal sings with hurricane force. His music embraces the gentle filigree of West African folk and the toughness of urban music. After attending conservatory in Paris in 1982 and pricking up ears in Europe, Maal returned to Senegal to form his current group, Daande Lenol, or Voice of the People. Like the griots he admires, Maal sings of history and heroes, bringing the lessons of the past into our lives today, as heard on the Black Hawk Down soundtrack. Maal brings his acoustic group to the Rialto, focusing on the folkloric and intimate music of Africa.
