ONGOING

THU APR 21 thru SAT APR 23
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science) Robotics Championship @ GA Dome
Months of preparation and regional competitions culminate April 21-23 at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship. For the first time, this year’s event marks the culmination of three separate season-long robotics competitions: The FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), FIRST LEGO League (FLL) World Festival and the FIRST Vex Challenge. All three competitions will take place in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta between April 21 and 23. FIRST was created by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway Human Transporter (HT), to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.
At FIRST, we want to show kids that it’s more fun to design and build a video game than it is to play one, and the FIRST Championship is a spectacular example of that idea in action, said FIRST Founder Dean Kamen. These kids have worked alongside professional engineers to design and build robots, learn teamwork and develop life skills, and now they’ve earned the right to compete
at the ultimate robotics competition.
The chief competition of the weekend will be the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship for high-school students, now in its fourteenth – and largest ever – season. Three hundred forty high school robotics teams, comprised of 8,500 students, will compete for top honors. This year’s game,
Triple Play, presents several new challenges to the teams: 3 versus 3 competition, new game objects and goals, a Tetrahedron game piece, vision camera and associated electronics. Nearly 1,000 teams made up of 25,000 high-school students from the United States, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Mexico, Israel and the United Kingdom participated in 30 regional competitions throughout March and April. In addition to earning a spot in the championship in Atlanta, teams competed for honors that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities.
