THU MAY 20
February One Film Screening @ MLK Jr. Site

IMAGE Film & Video and Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site present the Atlanta debut of FEBRUARY ONE, a documentary by Steven Channing, Rebecca Cerese, and Cynthia Hill. Despite hard-fought gains in the fight for racial equality, segregation remained firmly entrenched in 1960s America. February 1, 1960 changed everything. Four college freshmen, now known as the Greensboro Four, sent shockwaves throughout the
world by engaging in the first lunch counter sit-in a the downtown Woolworth building. FEBRUARY ONE documents one winter in Greensboro that not only challenged public accommodation customs and laws in North Carolina, but served as a blueprint for the wave of nonviolent civil rights protests that swept across the nation. The screening will be May 20, 2004, 7:30pm at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Visitor Center. Free admission.

THU MAY 20
‘Sweet Auburn: Where the Dream Began’ @ MLK Jr. Site

‘Sweet Auburn: Where the Dream Began’ Opens May 20 in Atlanta(Atlanta, Georgia—May 6, 2004) This summer the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, recaptures the
magic of an historic Atlanta corridor once described in Fortune magazine as “the richest Negro street in the world.”
“Sweet Auburn: Where the Dream Began,” an original exhibition running at the King historic site May 20-November 15, 2004, recounts the heyday, decline and contemporary revival of the community where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born. However, Sweet Auburn’s worth extends beyond King’s
celebrity, as it exemplifies the determination of African Americans to lead fulfilled, self-subsisting lives in the midst of legal segregation and oppression.
With an array of historic artifacts and photographs, the exhibition demonstrates how the Atlanta district played a vital role in the African-American struggle for justice and equality. In Sweet Auburn,
African Americans were relatively free from racial harassment as they owned, operated and patronized institutions catering to all aspects of community life.
“Sweet Auburn: Where the Dream Began” will be open daily May 20-November
15, 2004 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Visitor Center, 450 Auburn Avenue. Hours are 9am-5pm (until 6pm between June 15 and August 15). Admission is free.
