Raymond Loewy: Designs for a Consumer Culture @ Museum of Design

This engaging exhibition will celebrate the life's work of the father of American Industrial Design: Raymond Loewy. Audiences will travel through the evolution of Loewy's design career and at the same time experience the technological boom associated with mid-twentieth century America. From Loewy's early advertising illustrations, through his works in transportation design for household names such as Greyhound buses, United Airlines, and the Pennsylvania Railroad, to his famous household products including the Sears Coldspot refrigerator created during the post-war era, Loewy's ingenious skill for creating functional yet fabulous design shines through. Some objects in the exhibition will be drawn from the Smithsonian Institution collection.

Turner's First Thursdays Art Walk @ downtownATL

Over the past months Turner's First Thursdays has continued to grow with new programs and additional venues so that art lovers can view the arts, tour the historic districts of Downtown and enjoy various discounts at Downtown restaurants. Turner's First Thursdays is a self-guided tour of galleries, with no beginning or ending point, you are free to move at your own pace.

With its growth, Turner's First Thursdays has become more than just an arts walk. It is an event where singles can meet, business people can unwind, and couples can enjoy the beauty of Downtown’s landscape. And all these are accomplished while taking in the culture that the arts offer. To put it simply, no two trips could ever be the same.

Celebrating The Quilt in Downtown Atlanta
Central Atlanta Progress will host “An Atlanta Block Party – Celebrating The Quilt in Downtown Atlanta” from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 6 as part of Turner First Thursdays.
This free special event will feature displays of 12-foot by 12-foot sections or “blocks” of The AIDS Memorial Quilt in seven Downtown galleries.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt will be curated in the participating galleries to tell the story of life in the age of AIDS. The early years of the pandemic will be explored in an exhibition titled, "Life, Love and Loss: Selections from Billy Howard’s Epitaphs for the Living and The AIDS Memorial Quilt" at the Arts for All Gallery at VSA Arts of Georgia. In conjunction with the VSA exhibition, The Rialto Center for the Performing Arts will host 12 blocks of Quilt, memorializing nearly 100 lives lost to AIDS.

Other hosting galleries include Luckie Street Studios, Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia at SunTrust Plaza, The Museum of Design Atlanta, APEX (African American Panoramic Experience), and Youth Art Connection. The “Block Party” will also feature docent led tours, gallery talks and quilting/bundling demonstrations.

Complimentary Clos du Bois wine will be provided in selected venues.

Harvest Midtown 2005
Eno celebrates fall with the second annual Harvest Midtown festival Saturday, October 8, from 12 to 5 p.m. along 5th Street between West Peachtree and Peachtree Streets. As many as 2000 revelers will enjoy art, food from top neighborhood restaurants, live jazz music, an impressive selection of fine wines and a fashion show highlighting the Italian shirts and ties of Midtown-based LUI-B. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the Piedmont Park Conservancy, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta.

Harvest Midtown will feature an engaging art show and market, a live fashion show by LUI-B, live jazz by Rio Negro “Latin Jazz,” children’s activities and demonstrations and samplings from 14 to 20 of intown Atlanta’s top restaurants. More than 100 fine wines will be provided by every major growing region across the globe represented by Atlanta’s leading distributors and some of America’s top importers.
